DOs and DON'Ts of Furniture Shopping

Besides your actual house, the furniture you own is probably the biggest investment in your home. Furniture shopping is not a daily routine, when the activity comes around it is a pretty big event. So how do you go about planning furniture shopping? Do you carefully measure and assess every space in your home? Do you just go out and splurge on a whim?

We would recommend taking a smart and practical approach to your furniture shopping. Decking your home out in a brand-new piece can be very exciting, but a bit of planning means your latest home purchase is not going to become an expensive coat-hanger. That is why we have whipped up a list of DOs and DON’Tts for you enterprising furniture-shoppers out there:

DO measure twice, cut once.

Not only an expression in carpentry. If you find out that that gorgeous Ligne Roset sofa just does not fit in your living room on delivery, you’ll be cutting more than a few holes in your credit cards! Make sure you take measurements of your entries and passageways; a window is only a viable option if it is large enough to be worth consideration. Make sure you know the room size so you aren’t sitting there feeling lost when the sales representative begins to map out your brand-new Veneta Cucine kitchen. And make sure you bring along a measuring tape or ask your friendly sales rep for dimensions!

DON’T be afraid to ask questions.

Salespersons are here to help, so stop worrying that your questions will annoy them. A sales rep is there to help you choose what is best for you and asking them questions is what will ultimately help you make that choice. Consider asking how the furniture was made, and whether it can be easily dismantled. If it is a Ditre Italia sofa you are looking at, does it come with a chaise longue? Need an ergonomic chair? Ask the sales rep to walk you through all the adjustable qualities of the item. Don’t forget to ask about the warranty!

DO assess your lifestyle.

How you use your furniture is one of the most important considerations. Furnishing your library or home office, then perhaps a focus on aesthetics should be taken into account. Got pets or kids; then make sure you are looking at sturdy kitchen construction and easy-to-clean surfaces. Put your furniture needs ahead of your wants and make a list of items you need and prioritize according to your budget. If you are furnishing a home from top to bottom, the high-priority furniture must be bought first, you can always save that dining table for the next payday. Buying a new bed because your old one is beyond repair has greater importance than getting that beautiful lamp just because you think it will match the curtains. However…

DON’T forget about quality.

Yes that bed is a quarter of what you wanted to pay, and the mattress is included for free, but your back won’t be thanking your wallet a month down the line! You get what you pay for, and this is especially true when it comes to furniture. When you are in the store, don’t be shy. Open dresser drawers, test-sit every chair and bed and slam shut every kitchen cabinet and cupboard to check for soft-close hinges. We are not saying that paying through the nose at every shop means you will end up with better quality furniture. However, investing in Fino furniture means a guarantee of high-quality, an important lifestyle choice that will improve your day-to-day activities with excellence and style.
